DeLights! The Fun Factory Interview!

Twister by Fun Factory

Twister by Fun Factory

Most of our readers have become familiar with the fun and exciting sex toys produced by Fun Factory.  From the cute little dolphins, to the whimsical bookworms “Paul and Paulina” and the ferocious “Tiger,” Fun Factory has a range of products to suit every taste and desire.  Vibrators and dildos are just the beginning of the fare.  Fun Factory also produces some of the most interesting cock rings on the market and their Smart Balls are user favorites.

We had the opportunity to meet Rudy (Marketing) and Memo (Business Development),  from Fun Factory at the AVN Novelty Expo in Los Angeles and They impressed us as much as Fun Factory’s great products have.  Apparently, everyone was impressed with the Fun Factory team, with AVN giving them an O Award for Overall Outstanding Product Design.  So we asked if they would be willing to talk with us about Fun Factory and their fun, sexy toys and they agreed.  We think you’ll have a better appreciation for this great company after this interview.

****

ST- First, congratulations again for the O Award.  It was obviously well deserved.  We constantly hear about how people appreciate the Fun Factory designs and the interesting take your company has on sex toys.  What goes into Fun Factory Designs?  Is there a team of people that work specifically on design, or is it a company-wide synergy that works with customers and outside designers?  Or is it something else?

Rudy – Thanks! We were delighted to win! It’s a mixture of all! For us, it’s all about functional and high design.  On one hand we do have many types of engineers on board including industrial/electrical and in the other extreme we conduct numerous and detailed focus groups with our end users which are all coordinated  and lead by our in house marketing and sales teams  who coordinate all the process.  Women’s input is essential when designing a functional, ergonomic and appealing product with a very fun design that is the signature of our company. As a fun point just as many women as men work in Fun Factory!

ST – While we’re on the subject of design, one of the things that we noticed is that Fun Factory always incorporates the highest quality (and safest) materials in sex toys.  We know that from a marketing standpoint, it is always better to incorporate safe materials.  Do those materials also allow you to work with more interesting designs that other materials wouldn’t support?

RK – Yes! Our medical grade silicone gives all our toys a nice touch and is also easier to manipulate into the fun designs that make it to production.  It is not as hard as some other plastics and rubbers, which helps us make our designs a reality.

ST – When your first name is Fun, you’re likely going to have a more whimsical take on things.  As we mentioned before, Fun Factory toys come in shapes consumers can’t find elsewhere, like the Merry Mermaid (which is more or less a rabbit design with a cool mythical twist).  How do consumers react to whimsical new designs?  Do these sell as well as more traditional shapes and styles that you offer?

Rudy – Customers already expect our products to be “not your typical” design. We have found that the highest acceptance is a semi-realistic with a “Fun” twist but even our more traditional shapes are different from the norm and sell just as well

THE Massively Popular Bandito

THE Massively Popular Bandito

ST – One thing is certain, if you entered the Bandito into a popularity contest in the Sextoys.com offices, you’d have another award.  Our experts love this toy and so do our friends.  Among the common comments is that the design is perfect for hitting all of the right spots.  Because each body is different, it surprised me that so many people had the same praise for it.  Do you have a testing team that works with new designs to try to maximize each toy’s effectiveness?

Rudy– Absolutely! Although each woman’s body is different, certain areas are “similar in locations”. Our testing teams are composed of different types of women  who give their specific feedback during the design process. Also, as mentioned before, silicone is not as stiff as other materials and is more pliable which accommodates to different bodies

ST – Mechanically, Fun Factory designs are excellent and durable.  That durability makes toys last longer and therefore contribute less to waste.  Many of our customers ask about “green friendly” toys and how to play responsibly.  Your materials are environmentally friendly. We also know that you have rechargeable toys like the “DeLight” in your inventory.  Is this an area that the company is looking to expand in, or is the market demand still relatively low for rechargeable and green sex toys?

Memo Definitely! Eco-Friendly is the way to go! Even though demand might be small in the US compared to Europe, it is only the beginning and will grow as more current users and new younger generations are aware of the need for environmental friendly products in all industries, not only adult.  I can tell you that the demand for the rechargeable DeLight keeps on growing as part of this trend! Fun Factory already uses packaging material that can be recycled and is constantly revising manufacturing processes to exceed minimum environmental standards. However there is more  to come in the near future…

ST – To this point, we’ve asked about what is already out.  Now we’d like to ask about what will be coming along.  Are there new designs coming soon that you’d like to share with our readers?

Memo – We are launching the new, very cool and portable microVIBES FLY which incorporates the Fun Factory design and quality, ideal for women on the go , and as a discreet all occasion present!   The price point is excellent in these tough economic times without sacrificing the Fun Factory high quality and design. We also have some great new technological advances coming soon… but  I am sworn to secrecy for the moment!

Ginger Leigh has the inside scoop on the microVIBES in her post today! Click Here for Details!

ST – We really appreciate your time and energy, as much as we appreciate the great products that you provide.  Finally, is there anything we haven’t discussed that you’d like to add?

Memo – I want to share some of the philosophy that guides our company. We believe that Fun Factory products are proof that erotic toys can be tasteful, cheerful and high value at the same time. By means of the aesthetic shapes and fun loving designs, we would like to help reduce inhibition thresholds and prejudices in order to facilitate acceptance and access of erotic toys for women and men. Each Fun Factory toy is a piece of craftsmanship!  Finally love yourself! We believe only those who love themselves can give love!

Using Sex Furniture Can Make Sex Better

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Sometimes, spicing up adult play can be as simple as a new position.  And the experimental types among us know that many angles are not nearly as easy to achieve as they look in the photo!  Also, some approaches facilitate easier (and better) access to sensitive spots.  But what if you’ve tried and tried, and just can’t get in THAT position.

That’s where an investment in sex furniture can make a great difference in your sex life.  A good product can make it possible for you to get in the positions that weren’t previously possible.  Like Liberator says, “It’s time to teach your old doggie-style some new tricks.”

We should tell you that like regular furniture, sex furniture varies in quality.  Good sex furniture will last longer than cheaper knock offs, and good sex furniture will perform better than the lower quality items.  If you buy an inflatable product, you will have the problems associated with inflatable products.  While you may save a few bucks up front, your long term return won’t be nearly as good as you would get from a solid sex furniture product.

The Liberator Ramp

The Liberator Ramp

buy_it_now

Take the Liberator Ramp as a good example of high quality sex furniture:

“Liberator Ramp offers support with a deep slope elevation. It strategically lifts your lover’s hips to an altitude of 12 inches, offering access at critical angles that accentuate sensitivity.

It’s time to teach your old doggie-style some new tricks. The key to perfect rear-entry penetration is supported elevation. Supported elevation prevents falling forward, slipping, sore elbows and wrists and hips buried in the mattress.

With Ramp a couple can sustain the doggie-style position for longer, more satisfying sessions. Other Ramp specialties include positions off the side of the bed and an unbeatable girl-on-top ride.”

And let’s focus for a moment on a sensitive issue.  Some people have been injured, have chronic back or arthritis problems, or are physically incapable for whatever reason, of getting into a pleasurable sex position.  Good sex furniture can give those people their sex lives back.

Consider the Liberator Scoop, which can put someone in the perfect position, which includes almost any position you can imagine:

“Tilt it, tip it, dip it, flip it. The most dynamic of the Liberator line, the Scoop makes its own love locomotion, rocking you into action-packed, thrill-ride climaxes.

Flip it for a more stable sex setting and superior spinal support. As athletic or anchored as you like. Add other shapes for extra height, slope and support.

What’s Included: Scoop, dressed to thrill in a machine washable Microfiber cover as well as a silky nylon water-resistant play surface. Scoop-centric position guide to spark and inspire desire.< Black, nylon gig bag for luvin’ on the go.

Please note that Liberator products can only be shipped within the continental United States and cannot be shipped to military addresses.”

Think about what you’ve spent on your couch, your lamps, your coffee table, your bookshelves and even your dining room furniture.  Unless you are a seriously kinky sort (who wouldn’t need any help anyway), none of those things will ever provide the intense orgasm that a good piece of sex furniture can help you to achieve.  A small investment in a good piece of sex furniture can change your life.

And we mean for the better!

The G Spot Revisited

This is a G Spot sex toy

This is a G Spot sex toy

So the debate rages on about whether or not the G Spot exists.  From our standpoint, while the empirical data may be less than overwhelming, the number of G Spot sex toys that are manufactured and sold make a solid practical argument that someone is getting stimulation from the area Dr. Grafenberg first discussed. But once in a while, it’s good to look at recent discussions on the subject, especially if you want to experiment with this popular form of stimulation.

A recent article contained this sentence as its thesis: “Unlike men, women can orgasm in many different ways.”  It then went on to list different anatomical features like, clitoris, vagina and G Spot.  People who have read our work know that the article was then tossed aside.  The reason?  The clitoris and G Spot (such as it is considered to exist) are parts of the vagina!  Why go through all of the complex possible permutations when one fact stands out?  That fact is that each person finds a specific stimulation satisfying and can achieve orgasm through it.

Of all of the big mistakes a person can make, over-complicating sexual sensations is one of the biggest that can damage adult play time fun.

WebMD has a great section on this subject, which we think summarizes the argument over the G Spot very well:

“Prosterman and others point out the importance of thinking of the G-spot in context — that it may be an extension of the clitoral anatomy, which extends back into the vaginal canal. Kerner writes that the G-spot may be ‘nothing more than the roots of the clitoris crisscrossing the urethral sponge.’

Helen O’Connell, MD, head of the neurourology and continence unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital Department of Urology in Australia, says, ‘The G-spot has a lot in common with Freud’s idea of vaginal orgasms. It is a sexual concept, this time anatomical, that results in confusion and has resulted in the misconception that female sexuality is extremely complex.’”

The article also contains this:

A G Spot sex toy for couples

A G Spot sex toy for couples

“In the end, whether this debated locus of pleasure is fact or fiction may not matter that much. O’Connell, who is also co-author of a 2005 Journal of Urology study on the anatomy of the clitoris, says that focusing on the G-spot to the exclusion of the rest of a woman’s body is ‘a bit like stimulating a guy’s testicles without touching the penis and expecting an orgasm to occur just because love is present.’ She says focusing on the inside of the vagina to the exclusion of the clitoris is ‘unlikely to bring about orgasm. It is best to think of the clitoris, urethra, and vagina as one unit because they are intimately related.’”

Ok, so what is the G Spot and where is it?  The G Spot is an area which many women claim, if stimulated properly, can lead to intense orgasm.  What it is, we aren’t qualified to say, though the base of the clitoris sounds like a good guess, since the clitoris can have a shaft of one to three inches and the G Spot is generally agreed to be located two to three inches inside the vagina on the upper wall.

Do you have a G Spot?  That’s the question that you must answer.  Experimenting with sensations is a great way to see whether or not this area adds something more to your orgasm experience.  As we mentioned before, there are many quality G Spot sex toys designed to create that type of stimulation.

Let’s say for the sake of discussion that someone scientifically proves that the G Spot is a myth.  If you achieve intense orgasms by stimulating the area one to three inches inside on the vagina’s upper wall, does it matter?  Learning what works for you is an art, not a science.

So enjoy your next orgasm, wherever you find it.  And don’t be afraid to experiment.  Why should you be, it isn’t exactly a science!

Want To Choose a Healthy Sex Toy?

Silicone Dildo by Tantus

Now you’re ready to select the perfect sex toy to add the spice to your next play time.  There are so many to choose from that it is difficult to decide where to begin looking.  Do you want a G Spot dildo, a Rabbit vibrator, or some other kind of vibrator that will give you extra buzz?  Making the decision on what to buy can be incredibly difficult.

But you can make the selection process simpler by learning about which sex toys are healthiest for your body.  Selecting a body healthy sex toy can give you fun with peace of mind.  But even more importantly, sex toys that are built with body health in mind are almost always made from higher quality materials, which means that the toy itself will be more durable and a better value for your money.

The number of debates about sex toy materials have grown in recent years.  Let’s take a moment to sort out the facts.  Some people claim that all jelly sex toys are toxic.  Incendiary as the next statement may be, it must be written.  There is no scientific support for the assertion that ALL jelly sex toys are toxic.

And the Phthalate debate is still unsettled.  True, the United States banned the use of Phthalates in toys for children, but the body of evidence concerning Phthalates does not allow the conclusion that Phthalates always directly cause the maladies (including cancer) that some people have asserted they cause.

Just the same, there is a growing collection of evidence that points to problems with some sex toys.  The Dutch EPA commissioned a study (Which Tantus Inc. provides in its entirety here) that leads to some alarming conclusions.  I include a sampling below:

“The chemical substances include solvents, degradation products from accelerators and other rubber chemicals and plasticizers. Several of those are reprotoxic and a few have other injurious health effects, e.g. neurotoxic effects.”

That’s a fairly sobering paragraph that should make us all stop and think before we make our next purchase.  While not all toys contain these chemicals, if we don’t know how to shop, we could accidentally get a nasty surprise.

G Spot Glass Dong by Doc JohnsonIt should be noted that this report takes a tiny sampling of toys from a very large pool of possible sex toys.  But the point is, we should be careful when choosing what we will put on, or in, our bodies.  What if you could choose a toy that had the following qualities? (Source)

- Manufactured under strict Good Manufacturing Procedures in a controlled environment
- Platinum cured for the highest degree of purity (least extractables)
- Reusable — will withstand repeated sterilization
- Nonreactive to body tissues and fluids

Those properties sound like a far better alternative to use.  And when you get a Platinum Grade Silicone dildo, you get those exact properties!  Now you get a great dildo and a great, healthy alternative to a lesser quality material.

Glass dildos are also a good alternative, as are aluminum and hard plastic sex toys.  The point is this, you can still find a wide variety of fun sex toys without giving up the healthy options that eliminate many of the concerns associated with lower quality materials.

Shop carefully and you’ll discover that fun and quality can be intertwined.  Throw healthy into the mix and you have a sex toy that comes guilt free.  Think it through; you’ll see that you can get what you want and feel good about the purchase.  And that alone can make your next play session even more fun!

Your Safe Sex and Play Checklist

Monday, August 31st, 2009

So that condom is no big deal, right?  Safe sex is just a matter of being selective?  If you agree with either of those ideas, you really should read on.  And if you’re a fan of safe sex, we have some facts you might want to know as well.

When an airline pilot is preparing for takeoff, he goes through a rigorous checklist of his aircraft’s mechanics and functions.  Your odds of being in a fatal crash on the top 25 safe Airlines in the world is 1 in 13.57 million (Source).  Would you be surprised to discover that unprotected sex gives a woman 1 in 2 odds of catching Gonorrhea and 4 in 10 odds of catching Chlamydia (Source)?  That’s in just one unprotected encounter!

In 2007, slightly over 1 in 1,000 people contracted Gonorrhea, and that’s just the reported cases (Source).  So 1 in 13.57 MILLION people are involved in a plane crash with fatalities on highly safe airlines, 1 in 1,000 people contract Gonorrhea.  I think maybe it’s time we contemplate a safe sex checklist.  Those pilots may be on to something.

The right lubricant is critical to safety

The right lubricant is critical to safety

So here is a checklist we suggest you try out to improve your sexual health by engaging in safe sex and play.

First, if you are with a partner, do you have your condoms?  Think about it, if one unprotected encounter exposes you to a 50/50 chance of catching a nasty infection, each subsequent encounter almost guarantees that you’ll catch something that you’d really rather not have to treat.  And if you’re among the hearty sorts who doesn’t fear disease, perhaps you should have a look at the new resistant strains.

Unless you are in a long term, completely monogamous relationship with a partner who is disease free, you shouldn’t ever be without a condom when you’re ready for fun.  For everyone else, make sure the condom is number one on your safe sex checklist.

Second, if you plan to use lubrication (and if you’re planning on anal play, plan to use lubricant), make sure your lubricant is compatible with the condom or toy you’re using.  I was curious about how fast a latex condom would deteriorate with a silicone lubricant, so I ran a test using a condom on a rubber dildo.  I stretched a condom over, and applied silicone lubricant by hand.  The condom began to disintegrate on contact.

When I say disintegrate, I mean that in the literal sense of the word.  The condom was melting into goo in front of my eyes.  The dildo wasn’t doing well either.  Always use water based lubricants with latex condoms.  As you can see, checklist point two is critical to the safety of checklist point one.

The rest of our checklist relates specifically to toys.

Third, when using a sex toy like a dildo, make sure that you get into the habit of washing it before and after use.  A clean sex toy prevents the spread of infections.  Also, some materials can pick up small debris, which can lead to uncomfortable, unsanitary play.  A simple wash eliminates this problem.

Fourth, inspect your toy for any damage.  A chip on a glass toy can lead to painful issues.  A damaged retrieval mechanism on an anal toy can be dangerous as well.  If your toy has wiring (like a vibrator with a wired remote), make sure the wiring is not damaged.  Never play with a damaged sex toy.  The risk isn’t worth the sensation.

Fifth, make sure you intend to use your toy in the way it is intended to be used.  This is a simple rule that can save you from potentially dangerous play.  If you aren’t sure about your toy’s uses, contact us with our Ask an Expert button in the top right corner of this blog.

Finally, safe sex requires that you know your body.  Know your allergies and select toys that won’t affect them.  Silicone dildos and vibrators are great hypoallergenic choices for play.  Make sure the lubricant you select is body safe for you.  Know what size of dildo you can safely use.  Body safe toys are critical to safety, and for that matter, fun!

This is just a rudimentary checklist.  You may have even more items you want to add to yours.  But if you have a safety checklist, and you follow it well in advance of your next play time, when it’s time to have fun, you can focus on the whole point of adult play – HAVING FUN!  So take the time to make sure you’re prepared, then go out and have fun!

And follow your checklist.

3 Steps For Great Dildo Play

Scrudy by Fun Factory

Scrudy by Fun Factory

Having fun with a dildo is really not a difficult thing to do.  But, having a knee shaking, earth quaking session with a dildo requires just a little more attention to details that will create a perfect experience.  Experienced sex toy aficionados will tell you that following these three simple steps will improve your dildo play and make it even more fun than you can imagine.

Step 1 – Select the dildo that accomplishes EXACTLY what you want it to do.  Many times, people select the dildo that they find most visually appealing.  That makes sense because having a dildo that is unappealing isn’t conducive to fun.  But, visual appeal only goes so far in the orgasm department.  Good looks don’t compensate for good feel, or good function.

Know what you want your dildo to stimulate, and how you want to achieve that stimulation before you make a purchase.  Do you want a dildo that fits in a strap on harness?  Do you want G-spot stimulation from a dildo you can attach to the wall while you shower?  Those two notions can’t necessarily be accomplished by the same dildo.  With this decision, you have to remember that form and function are equally important.

Step 2 – With dildos, size matters.  This may seem like an obvious statement, but many people make the mistake of buying a dildo that is either too large, or too small.  Think “just right” when you are shopping for your dildo.  Getting a dildo that is too large can be a painful experience.  Getting one that is too small will deprive you of all of the stimulation you are hoping for.

Getting a dildo that is the right size will give you a satisfying experience that you’ll enjoy over and over.

Step 3 – Maintenance is the key to long term happiness with your dildo.  Washing it before and after use (according to manufacturer’s instructions) will prolong the life of your dildo.  Proper storage is important for preventing damage, or decay.  Another part of this equation is what we call maintenance through proper usage.

Avoid using a dildo for both vaginal and anal play.  If you want both sensations, buy two and keep your body safe!  Avoid sharing dildos made from porous materials, this can lead to infection in some cases.  Also, never use a dildo for anal play that is not designed for anal play.  You don’t want things going in that you can’t get out!

Using these 3 simple steps, you can get the most from your dildo and play time.  Your play time will be more fun and your dildo will last longer.  Both of those benefits are definitely worth a tiny bit of extra care and effort!

Revisiting One Size Fits All Questions

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
Find out what does it for you and roll with it

Find out what does it for you and roll with it

Every once in a while I get blindsided by a type of question that makes me stop and wonder if people really over contextualize sex to the point where it is no longer a part of their natural life.  It’s almost as if eating, drinking, sleep, exercise and social activities are one part of physical activities, and sex is this grand mystery that is separated from normal biological function.

Last night I had a medical professional – who gave me permission to use the question as an example – ask me a question that floored me.

Fortunately, I don’t need to use the complete question.  It began with “Should every guy…”  Here’s a tip to remember when you think about purchasing a sex toy: If you begin a question to yourself with “Should all,” or “Should every,” or any other variation of that theme, the answer is almost always no.  I racked my brain looking for exceptions to the rule.  I found one in “Should everyone use a condom when having sex with a stranger?”  I’d answer yes to that one.  I’d also advise “everyone” to avoid using an electric toy with a cord in the shower.

But those are common sense questions.  When it comes to issues of desire and taste, “every” and “all” should be excluded from any question you ask.  So if you want to know if every guy should have a vibrating cock ring handy for sex, I’d answer no.  Some guys find it difficult to concentrate on having fun when their testicles are buzzing.  Other guys can’t achieve a great orgasm without one.

Should every woman have a dildo?  Some women love them.  They love big, life like replicas of a real penis.  Other women find that type of dildo none too attractive.  And what about the woman who simply loves clitoral stimulation?  Should she have a 12 inch porn star replica?  No.

So when you are ready to shop for the toy you want, remember the “want” in that sentence.  There is no “cool kid” clique when it comes to finding the right toy.  If you’re a Vegan, would you order a steak from the menu? Use that same approach when you shop for a toy.

Have a look at our menu, find the toy that suits your taste and then enjoy it.  You’ll be much happier in the final analysis.  And, you might even find yourself sampling other flavors once you figure out what works for you.  We love seeing people get what they want.  That’s the whole point in getting a toy anyway, right?

Topco Sales Sponsors Second April Flores Toy Art Exhibit

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I’m a big fan of April Flores and was thrilled to get a look at the recent exhibit that featured the April Flores Voluptuous Pussy from Topco.

Sadly, I’m an East Coast gal and I won’t be able to see this for myself, but here’s the info in case you’re luckier than I!

SAN FRANCISCO—The art exhibit featuring April Flores’ Voluptuous CyberSkin Pussy replica from Topco Sales is traveling to Good Vibrations’ Polk Street Gallery in San Francisco for a Sept. 16 showing.

The exhibit is curated by Carlos Batts and sponsored by Topco Sales. The event takes place as part of Good Vibrations’ 2009 Indie Erotic Film Fest and also serves as a DVD pre-release celebration for Glamazons, an artistically explicit DVD from Heartcore Films, which is scheduled for release Sept. 28.

“BBW fans are going to think they’ve died and gone to heaven,” Carlos Batts said. “We have all eight of the artists that participated in the first exhibit at La Luz de Jesus [in Los Angeles] in May, and we’ve added five new local artists from the San Francisco area. The best part of all is that it’s free and open to the public.”

Artists scheduled to participate in the upcoming San Francisco exhibit include Axis, Carlos Batts, COOP, Jim Mahfood, Kime Buzzelli, Kozy, Dan, Small Paul, Brian Donnelly, Stephan Kasner, Zak Smith, Dr. Carol Queen and Dr. Robert M. Lawrence.

“The first show here in Los Angeles was a hit, thanks in part to the colorful nature of our city’s inhabitants,” said Desiree Duffie, director of marketing and public relations for Topco Sales. “I can only imagine an art show this provocative in nature will be even better received in San Francisco. Topco Sales employs so many artists and creative-minded individuals; we are all excited to see what the five new artists bring to the table at this second exhibit.”

The April Flores’ Love Toy Art Show and Glamazons DVD Release Party is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16. Admission is free and the event is open to the public at the Good Vibrations Polk Street Gallery, located at 1620 Polk St., San Francisco.
