Silicone Lube

Lube is Awesome!

I’m a huge advocate of lube and think that everyone should own a few bottles.  Bill wrote a great piece about the importance of selecting the right lube for your toy, but I thought I would write a little bit about silicone lubrication specifically.

The first thing you should always remember about a silicone product is that it can’t be used with your silicone toys.   It will react with the toy causing the material to break down.  I’m probably starting to sound like a broken record regarding this, but I’d hate for anyone to ruin  a nice toy because they grabbed the wrong lube.

You may ask why not just use a water-based lube all the time?  Well, that’s definitely an option, but I personally think there are some advantages to a silicone product and that different situations call for different personal lubricants.

One time when silicone lube is a must, in my opinion, is if you’re looking to get wet and wild.  Water-based lube is virtually useless in the shower or hot tub for obvious reasons.  A good silicone lube won’t wash away as easily and will keep things nice and slippery!

In my experience, silicone lubes also tend to last a lot longer.  That means you don’t have to stop and reapply throughout your play and a little bit goes a long way.  While they are often a little more expensive, a drop or two is all you really need.pjur2

Because it tends to last longer, a lot of people I’ve talked to prefer silicone-based products for anal play.  There’s no natural lubrication in your butt, so it’s really important to make sure for your pleasure and safety to keep everything plenty slippery.

In the interest of full disclosure, silicone lube is not perfect.  While silicone lube is great for playing in the water, it also can be a bitch to clean up compared to water-based products and has been known to stain sheets.  Some people don’t like the feeling of silicone lube, although it doesn’t  bother me.  I do have to agree that water-based lubes more closely mimic a woman’s natural lubrication.

One final thing you should always do before purchasing a lube is to read the label. Unless you’re a fan of yeast infections, I would suggest avoiding any thing that has any sugar derivatives or glycerin in it. You should also keep an eye out for parabens because there is some question as to how safe they really are. Of course, whether we’re talking lubricant or well drinks from the dive bar on the corner, it’s always important to keep track of what’s going in your body!

In the end, lube is a very personal thing and my favorite may do nothing for you.  However, one thing I feel confident is saying is that lube will definitely enhance whatever goes on behind your bedroom doors.

Whether you’re looking for water or silicone-based, Pjur Lubricant is one brand I highly recommend.

Fun Factory BodyFluid

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I’m a huge advocate of lube and hope that a day will come when it’s no longer a taboo topic.  The notion that there’s something wrong with a woman if she isn’t dripping wet during each and every sexual exchange is one that pisses me off.  A good lube will, without a doubt, enhance your sex life.

Fun Factory’s BodyFluid is a silicone lube that’s made safe for vaginal or anal sex and is one that was definitely made with the user’s health in mind.  It is Glycerin-Free, which is really important unless you are a fan of yeast infections, and also doesn’t contain Parabens.

Of course, you should never use a silicone based lube with any silicone toys.  This seems a little odd to me because Fun Factory makes some of my favorite silicone toys, but they also have a great water-based lube that is great, ToyFluid. If you’ve ever purchased a toy from them you’ve probably received a sample and know how great it is.

If you’re looking for a quality silicone based lubed from a company that is dedicated to creating products that meet the highest quality standards, BodyFluid is one to consider.

Using the Right Lube for Your Toy

Wet Light Classic

Wet Light Classic

A new toy can provide excitement and spice up your play time.  From the moment the package is opened, anticipation starts to build. But that excitement can be wrecked in short order with one wrong decision. Nothing will ruin a potentially good time with a new toy faster than selecting the wrong lubrication for that toy.

Lubricants are important to play time, and any number of people will answer differently to the question: Which is the best lube?  That’s a question that doesn’t have a correct answer, except in some very specific circumstances. A water based lubricant is acceptable for any type of play.  One drawback of water-based lubricants is that they require re-application for extended play sessions.  They don’t always hold up well over long periods of time.

Silicone, or an oil-based lubricant, will usually last much longer than a water-based lube.  Silicone lubes last for extraordinary lengths of time, even when the play is vigorous.  But these lubes come with a catch.  We’ll outline a few hard and fast rules that will help you avoid a messy, or dangerous, mistake when selecting a lubricant.

First, never use silicone-based lubricants with a silicone toy. The interaction between the lubricant and the toy will create a mess and it will ruin the toy.  It’s pointless to buy a high quality silicone dildo, only to have it ruined on first use.  Only water-based lubes should be used with silicone toys.

This begs a question.  If water-based lubes don’t last as long, isn’t that a negative aspect of a silicone toy?  Sure, but you should consider the trade you’re making.  The silicone toy will last longer, cleans up easier, is generally more hygienic than most toys, and it warms to the touch.  All of those should far outweigh having to add a little more lube during playtime.

The hitch with silicone toys – as in the toys themselves – is that not everything that is called silicone is completely silicone.  Some toys, like the TPR Silicone toys, are only ten percent silicone.  The law allows it to be labeled as a silicone toy.  The remaining ninety percent is rubber.  The idea here is that you need to be certain of what is in the toy’s materials.  This is important because of our next rule – where rubber is concerned.

Second, oil and latex – or rubber – don’t mix.  Using an oil-based lubricant will break down a latex condom.  That’s dangerous for everyone involved.  Oil-based lubricants could also wreck a favorite rubber dong or butt plug.  If you’re going to play with a rubber or latex toy, use a water based lubricant.  Also remember that cleaning a rubber toy is difficult, if you don’t use care in selecting a good lubricant.

This rule applies to jelly toys too.

The last rule we’ll suggest for now, is always know what material from which your toy is constructed, before you apply an oil-based or silicone-based lubricant.  If you don’t know, just use a water-based lube to be on the safe side.  It’s better to be safe, than to have to buy a new toy, or compromise a condom’s effectiveness.  Once you know which kind of lube to use, all that’s left is to find the brand you feel is most effective for you.  This goes back to what we covered earlier.  That’s an individual opinion with no correct answer.

Or, you could just use a Glass toy!  These are safe with all three types, and are fun to use.  We’ll talk about lubes again, but this is a good way to get acquainted.
