A new toy can provide excitement and spice up your play time. From the moment the package is opened, anticipation starts to build. But that excitement can be wrecked in short order with one wrong decision. Nothing will ruin a potentially good time with a new toy faster than selecting the wrong lubrication for that toy.
Lubricants are important to play time, and any number of people will answer differently to the question: Which is the best lube? That’s a question that doesn’t have a correct answer, except in some very specific circumstances. A water based lubricant is acceptable for any type of play. One drawback of water-based lubricants is that they require re-application for extended play sessions. They don’t always hold up well over long periods of time.
Silicone, or an oil-based lubricant, will usually last much longer than a water-based lube. Silicone lubes last for extraordinary lengths of time, even when the play is vigorous. But these lubes come with a catch. We’ll outline a few hard and fast rules that will help you avoid a messy, or dangerous, mistake when selecting a lubricant.
First, never use silicone-based lubricants with a silicone toy. The interaction between the lubricant and the toy will create a mess and it will ruin the toy. It’s pointless to buy a high quality silicone dildo, only to have it ruined on first use. Only water-based lubes should be used with silicone toys.
This begs a question. If water-based lubes don’t last as long, isn’t that a negative aspect of a silicone toy? Sure, but you should consider the trade you’re making. The silicone toy will last longer, cleans up easier, is generally more hygienic than most toys, and it warms to the touch. All of those should far outweigh having to add a little more lube during playtime.

The hitch with silicone toys – as in the toys themselves – is that not everything that is called silicone is completely silicone. Some toys, like the TPR Silicone toys, are only ten percent silicone. The law allows it to be labeled as a silicone toy. The remaining ninety percent is rubber. The idea here is that you need to be certain of what is in the toy’s materials. This is important because of our next rule – where rubber is concerned.
Second, oil and latex – or rubber – don’t mix. Using an oil-based lubricant will break down a latex condom. That’s dangerous for everyone involved. Oil-based lubricants could also wreck a favorite rubber dong or butt plug. If you’re going to play with a rubber or latex toy, use a water based lubricant. Also remember that cleaning a rubber toy is difficult, if you don’t use care in selecting a good lubricant.
This rule applies to jelly toys too.
The last rule we’ll suggest for now, is always know what material from which your toy is constructed, before you apply an oil-based or silicone-based lubricant. If you don’t know, just use a water-based lube to be on the safe side. It’s better to be safe, than to have to buy a new toy, or compromise a condom’s effectiveness. Once you know which kind of lube to use, all that’s left is to find the brand you feel is most effective for you. This goes back to what we covered earlier. That’s an individual opinion with no correct answer.
Or, you could just use a Glass toy! These are safe with all three types, and are fun to use. We’ll talk about lubes again, but this is a good way to get acquainted.
