A Buyer’s Guide For Strap-On Sex

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Curious about strap-on sex but unsure where to start? Strap-on play is really popular, but before you dive right in and buy some toys, there are a few things you should think about. If you’re looking to play golf, it’s important to research your clubs first if you want to be successful – the same research is required if you want to set the bedroom on fire with a scorchin’ hot strap-on session!

O-Ring Harness

O-Ring Harness

The first thing to consider is whether or not a dildo is compatible with the harness you want to use. There are two basic strap-on systems, the Vac-U-Lock system from Doc Johnson and O-Ring Harnesses.  I personally prefer the O-Ring system because it’s not restricted to one toy company so there’s more variety.  Of course, if you already have a Vac-U-Lock system, don’t worry because they make a wide variety of toys and I’m sure you won’t get bored any time in the near future.

With an O-Ring Harnesses, the dildo is held in place by a ring of plastic, silicone or metal ring that also determines the maximum diameter of the toy used.  If you have a harness with a 1.5 inch o-ring and a dildo with a 2 inch diameter dong, you won’t be able to use them together.  Of course, a number of rigs come with interchangeable o-rings, so you can use different size rings with different dildos.  Since I agree that variety is the spice of life, I think this is a very good thing.

Whether you’re thinking about getting your first harness or a seasoned cock slinger, you need a really great dildo to make the most of your strap-on sessions. While a harnesses construction, comfort and effectiveness is really important, you’re not going to maximize the pleasure if you aren’t using the right dick.

Besides size, another really important thing to think about when picking up a new cock for strap-on sex is the design.  If a dildo does not have a flared base like the Mistress pictured here, it will not work with your o-ring harness because there’s nothing to hold it in place!

Of course, you should also consider the material your dong is crafted from.  I’m guessing you’re going to be strapping, so spending a few bucks on a silicone toy that can be sterilized is a great idea.  Silicone is also phthalate-free, hypoallergenic and made to last a lifetime if properly cared for.

If you’re interested in the Vac-U-Lock system, let me tell you a little bit about that.  Doc Johnson’s patented system is known for being really secure.  You don’t have to worry about your dildo slipping out of the harness and it offers a lot of control.  The dildo and harness are connected via their unique plug.

While the system is very secure, I will remind you once again that it is only compatible with Doc Johnson Vac-U-Lock products. They offer everything from vibrating dongs, to double dildos and monster cocks, so there’s plenty of variety, but it is definitely worth thinking about if you already have a few harness compatible dildos you could incorporate into your strap-on sessions.

Finally, regardless of what kind of harness you decide on, take the time to really think about what kind of dildo you want to use and why. If you’re looking to experiment with pegging for the first time, you’re boy will probably be far more receptive if you start off with a smaller toy. If you love g-spot stimulation, make sure your toy is designed to hit that magic button. Of course, take a little time to think about your sexual well-being and choose toys that are made from quality materials.

Strap-on sex is a ton of fun and a great way to change things up in the bedroom. With a little research and an open mind, you’re in for a great time!

Want To Choose a Healthy Sex Toy?

Silicone Dildo by Tantus

Now you’re ready to select the perfect sex toy to add the spice to your next play time.  There are so many to choose from that it is difficult to decide where to begin looking.  Do you want a G Spot dildo, a Rabbit vibrator, or some other kind of vibrator that will give you extra buzz?  Making the decision on what to buy can be incredibly difficult.

But you can make the selection process simpler by learning about which sex toys are healthiest for your body.  Selecting a body healthy sex toy can give you fun with peace of mind.  But even more importantly, sex toys that are built with body health in mind are almost always made from higher quality materials, which means that the toy itself will be more durable and a better value for your money.

The number of debates about sex toy materials have grown in recent years.  Let’s take a moment to sort out the facts.  Some people claim that all jelly sex toys are toxic.  Incendiary as the next statement may be, it must be written.  There is no scientific support for the assertion that ALL jelly sex toys are toxic.

And the Phthalate debate is still unsettled.  True, the United States banned the use of Phthalates in toys for children, but the body of evidence concerning Phthalates does not allow the conclusion that Phthalates always directly cause the maladies (including cancer) that some people have asserted they cause.

Just the same, there is a growing collection of evidence that points to problems with some sex toys.  The Dutch EPA commissioned a study (Which Tantus Inc. provides in its entirety here) that leads to some alarming conclusions.  I include a sampling below:

“The chemical substances include solvents, degradation products from accelerators and other rubber chemicals and plasticizers. Several of those are reprotoxic and a few have other injurious health effects, e.g. neurotoxic effects.”

That’s a fairly sobering paragraph that should make us all stop and think before we make our next purchase.  While not all toys contain these chemicals, if we don’t know how to shop, we could accidentally get a nasty surprise.

G Spot Glass Dong by Doc JohnsonIt should be noted that this report takes a tiny sampling of toys from a very large pool of possible sex toys.  But the point is, we should be careful when choosing what we will put on, or in, our bodies.  What if you could choose a toy that had the following qualities? (Source)

- Manufactured under strict Good Manufacturing Procedures in a controlled environment
- Platinum cured for the highest degree of purity (least extractables)
- Reusable — will withstand repeated sterilization
- Nonreactive to body tissues and fluids

Those properties sound like a far better alternative to use.  And when you get a Platinum Grade Silicone dildo, you get those exact properties!  Now you get a great dildo and a great, healthy alternative to a lesser quality material.

Glass dildos are also a good alternative, as are aluminum and hard plastic sex toys.  The point is this, you can still find a wide variety of fun sex toys without giving up the healthy options that eliminate many of the concerns associated with lower quality materials.

Shop carefully and you’ll discover that fun and quality can be intertwined.  Throw healthy into the mix and you have a sex toy that comes guilt free.  Think it through; you’ll see that you can get what you want and feel good about the purchase.  And that alone can make your next play session even more fun!

Spoil Yourself With Quality Rabbit Vibes

Rabbit Habbit VibratorWe know that women love rabbit style vibrators.  There are always a number of them among our Best Sellers on the site and, thanks to a guest spot on Sex in the City, they are one of the most talked about sex toys.

For those of you who are in the dark about these amazing vibes, let me offer a quick explanation of what makes them so popular.  A traditional rabbit vibe, like the Rabbit Habit seen here, has a vibrating shaft that rotates with an attached clit stimulator that often looks like a bunny, hence the name.  If you’re smart, in my opinion, you’ll pick up one that also has rotating beads in the shaft for extra amazing stimulation.

I’m a huge fan and proud owner of the Rabbit Habit, and I want women to share in the pure bliss that is an evening spent with one of these mind-blowing toys.  Because of this, we’ve recently added a new category to sextoys.com that highlights all of our finest Rabbit Style Vibrators.  Because they are so popular, there are a million available and we wanted to help you narrow down your choices by eliminating clunky jelly toys from the mix.

All of the toys included are made from phthalate-free materials like medical grade silicone, elastomer and TPR. You’ll find plenty of classics, but we’ve also added a few new interpretations of this style like Fun Factory’s Mary Mermaid.Mary Mermaid Vibe

This gorgeous toy takes all of the great things about these vibes, and combines them in an artistic new version crafted from 100% medical grade silicone.  And don’t worry, you can’t see them, but that lovely lady houses rows of rotating pearls for an extra special touch.

The romantic mermaid delights with her enchanting design: a flowing structure and an anatomical shape.

The invigorating rotations of the beaded shaft stimulate vaginally while wonderful vibrations pamper the clitoris. Indescribably exhilarating.

If you’ve never tried one of these fabulous orgasm machines, you should definitely look into them.   If you’re looking to upgrade, you’re going to love our new selection of quality toys!
